Ralph Conner Memorial United Church
BVGECs inaugural community generation project is hosted on the Ralph Conner Memorial United Church. This 11.4kW project will produce a projected 12,000 kWh of clean energy, to be directly consumed by the church and offset 7.4 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide emissions annually.
Built back in 1890-91, the historic Ralph Connor Memorial United Church was named, in 1942, for its founder and first minister, Charles W. Gordon, who wrote popular stories and novels under the pen name, Ralph Connor. On January 24, 2021, the Church celebrated its 130th birthday!
As an Alberta Heritage-listed building, this project came with the added caveat that the solar panels should not be visible from the ground.
In addition to our collaborative solar panel project, Ralph Connor Church has been involved in other retrofits to decrease our "carbon footprint" such as replacing fluorescent light fixtures with LED fixtures, upgrading insulation and heating efficiency, and moving to more energy-efficient kitchen appliances. Thanks to Ralph Conner for leading the way on climate action initiatives here in the Bow Valley.
