Partnering for Rural Prosperity: BVGEC’s Role in Co-operative Innovation Research
Bow Valley Green Energy Cooperative
At Bow Valley Green Energy Cooperative (BVGEC), we’re proud to have been featured in a major research initiative led by the Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities (ACSRC) at the University of Alberta. The project, Co-operatives & Rural Economic Development, explores the powerful role co-operatives can play in building stronger, more resilient rural communities, and we're honoured to be part of that story.
Why We Got Involved
As a community-owned renewable energy co-operative, we’ve always believed that local ownership and sustainability go hand in hand. When ACSRC approached us about participating in their research, we saw a meaningful opportunity to share what we’ve learned and to learn from others across Alberta and beyond.
Their project, funded by the Alberta Real Estate Foundation, highlights how co-operative models like ours can support rural economic development. From creating local jobs and reinvesting in our community to lowering our carbon footprint, we live by these values every day at BVGEC.
Sharing Our Experience
Throughout the research process, we had the chance to connect with other innovative co-operatives across Alberta, including those in sectors like agriculture, energy, and finance. It was inspiring to see how diverse co-operative models are helping rural communities thrive in unique and creative ways.
Our involvement included contributing to case studies, interviews, and a panel presentation at the Reimagining Rural Economic Development conference in October 2023. It was a great space to discuss the challenges and opportunities we face as a rural energy co-op and to hear what others are doing to strengthen their local economies.
A Growing Conversation
In May 2024, we tuned in to a webinar where ACSRC released the final report: Innovative Uses of the Co-op Model and Rural Economic Development Opportunities in Alberta and Beyond. It’s an insightful resource full of ideas for communities and policymakers who want to better support local, sustainable economic models.
This kind of research is vital. It not only validates our work, but it also sparks conversations and action at all levels about the future of rural Alberta.
What’s Next?
For us at BVGEC, this collaboration has reaffirmed our mission and reminded us that we’re not alone. Co-operatives are making a difference across the province, and we’re excited to be part of a larger movement driving grassroots change.
We’re grateful to the ACSRC team for including us in this important work, and we look forward to continuing to share knowledge, build partnerships, and grow the role of community-owned renewable energy in Alberta’s rural economy.
